Synopsis for "The Screams of Hungry Flesh"
This issue begins with the Swamp Thing reluctantly arriving at the Barclay Clinic (a private clinic for treating Sunderland Corporation employees). Here he meets Dennis Barclay, a doctor who believes he has the power of psychic healing and seemingly treats Swamp Thing's wounds with only his hands.
Later, at around the same time that Elizabeth Tremayne arrives at the clinic, Swampy makes the disturbing discovery that a lower level of the clinic is full of unconscious human clones. After learning about this secret, the Doctor, Tremayne and Swampy plot to leave before the corporation silences them but before fleeing they disconnect the clones from their coma-inducing equipment.
Before they are able to escape, Harry Kay and his goons confront the trio and finally explain the true nature of the clones. They are called Receptors and are programmed to absorb the injury and sickness of their human counterpart through psychic empathy. Their purpose is to prevent any loss of productivity of the Sunderland Corporation employees but they are also fully sentient and aware.
The Receptors wake up and seek revenge for the pain and suffering they are inflicted. Tremayne, Barclay and Swampy escape in an ambulance, Harry Kay narrowly escapes in a helicopter and the goons are left to the Receptors.
