Synopsis for the 1st Story
Captain Jasper attacks Louis Simpson for stabbing Kemp.[1] Dr. James Thacker breaks up the fight and reminds them that Kemp is dying and they need to rush him back to their ship for medical aid. Simpson warns him they won't make it as he killed their dogs to keep them away. They must now forge forward and follow him to his camp to save their friend's life.
Simpson explains two years ago he joined a Jesuit Mission to bring the word of Christ to the Alaskan savages. When he learned how graceful and peaceful they were, he began to side with them. He eventually fell in love, and decided to stay and learn their ways.
One day, he was out exploring and found a cave. Inside graves littered the floor and were carved to appear like doorways. He opened one to find the skeletal remains of an animal child inside. When his tribesman soon found him, they immediately dragged him out, fearing what he had unleashed. They explained the land was sacred and it was never to be tread upon by anyone except their village shaman. The graves were where their gods rested and he had unlocked the grave of Tekkietsertok, the god of the deer and hunting, and they soon would pay a grave price.
Simpson explains his wife soon became pregnant. She gave birth to a deer-boy hybrid. His people believed the god had taken human form to regain his land. His people soon became sick with an illness.
