The Sword of Gotham is an operative of the Living Gotham. It is a sentient program able to possess anyone in Neo-Gotham.[1]
History
The Living Gotham had billions of nanobots manufactured by Wayne-Powers and released into the city's water supply, infecting the entire population. These nanobots allowed the Sword to take control of the hosts' mind and body. They also included Donovan Lumos' holographic technology, so the Sword was able to project an illusion around its host, concealing their identity and making it appear that the Sword was a living man rather than a program.[2]
Batman prevented a shipment of drugs coming into Neo-Gotham. These drugs would have killed 3,450 people across Gotham and, as Batman had prevented that, the Living Gotham sent the Sword to kill an equal number of people and "keep the line flat". After a fight with Batman, the Sword of Gotham blew up its host and an apartment building containing 3,499 people to balance out the lives he had indirectly saved.[3]
The Living Gotham initially intended to simply wait for Batman to die of natural causes, but he continued to interfere.[4] The Sword possessed an elderly man named Roberto Carrasco and laid a trap for Batman in the mayor's office. Batman managed to escape by tricking the Sword into cutting through the trap's hard light walls, but the Sword chased him and eventually stabbed him in the chest, rendering the Batsuit almost inoperable. However, Batman was able to throw an explosive Batarang at the Sword, which disrupted its hard light facade, revealing Carrasco underneath. Batman fled to the home of Officer Beam Boonma, but the Sword possessed her as well. The Sword severely beat the almost helpless Batman, but he was able to free Boonma from the Sword's control by hitting her with a high powered taser.[1]
The Living Gotham planned to take direct control of every civilian in Neo-Gotham at midnight of New Year' Eve, one year since its awakening. Batman and his allies attempted to foil the plan and the Living Gotham sent an army of Swords against him, but Batman's new Batsuit incorporated hard light technology of its own which allowed him to disrupt the Sword's control.
After the Living Gotham was defeated Lumos systematically dismantled its ability to influence the physical world, including by transforming people into the Sword.[5]
