Tasmia Mallor, Umbra is a Talokite member of the Legion of Super-Heroes with the natural ability to generate and manipulate intense fields of darkness.

On her homeworld Talok VIII, Tasmia was taken at birth and put through years of rigorous training to become the next Talok Planetary Champion after her mother. When Talok became assimilated into the United Planets, her position became obsolete, and she was dismissed.[1] After an incident with the Emerald Eye of Ekron in which a large number of then-active Legionnaires were transported to the 20th Century,[2] tryouts for potential new additions to the Legion were held in Metropolis, which Tasmia attended. She was accepted for her abilities and prowess, and took the codename Umbra.[3]

Powers

  • Talokite Physiology: As a non-terrestrial being, a Talokite's body chemistry is different from that of a normal human, providing them with different physical attributes, such as the ability to exist in the vacuum of space longer than a normal human.
  • Darkness Manipulation: She can cast darkfields preventing all light from reaching an area from outside. These can either be complete, effectively rendering useless all light sources within the area, or hollow to allow the interior to be lit. She can also solidify these fields, to use as a more direct weapon. Shadow Lass has the power to create darkness 100 times darker than a moonless night. Her black shadows are impenetrable by light. Shadow Lass can project protective shadows around persons she cannot see and are elsewhere in a city.
    • Shadow-Sight: She has shadow-sensitive eyes that give her the ability to see in darkness. She can draw strength from the slightest shadow or dark corner. She can also build up her power by wrapping her face in the folds of her cape and shielding her eyes from glare. As she expands her shadow nearer to light sources the pressure becomes greater, her mind feeling like it's on fire.

Equipment

  • Legion Flight Ring: All Legionnaires were presented with a flight ring that enabled them to defy gravity and sustain movement through the air by aerodynamically generating force.

  • Literally an "Umbra" is the darkest part of a shadow. (Umbra is also latin for Shadow)[4]
  • Tasmia can actually smell light.[5]
