Terrence Sloane operated as a masked superhero under the name Mister Terrific. He was a member of the Justice Society of America and is the predecessor of Michael Holt.
History
Terry Sloane effortlessly succeeded at everything he attempted, to the point that he felt life was meaningless as there was nothing left to achieve. He planned to kill himself, but just as he was about to jump off a bridge he saw a woman nearby doing the same thing. He stopped the woman, named Wanda Wilson, and learned that her brother was in trouble with organized crime. Terry adopted the masked identity of Mister Terrific and broke up the gang, finding new purpose in life helping desperate people through his Fair Play Club.[1] In New York, Mister Terrific rescued a children's trivia contest from the villainous Spirit King, and challenged its winner, Raghu Seetharaman, to a contest that lasted for twelve hours before resulting in a draw. Impressed by the boy's performance, Terrific took him on as his sidekick, "Quiz Kid," and with him solved many crimes deemed unsolvable, until their 1946 investigation of the disappearance of Betsy Ross and Molly Pitcher, in the course of which Quiz Kid also vanished.[2]
Terry Sloane was honored with a statue in his likeness at the JSA Headquarters,[3] and his Justice Society teammate the Spectre shared his story with the grieving Michael Holt, leading him to take up the mantle of Mister Terrific.[4] Later, Sloane's memory was invoked by the returned Quiz Kid to encourage Holt to reform the Fair Play Club and take a more active role in bettering the lives of regular people.[1]
