Synopsis for "Down in the Dark"
Three days had passed since the Atom received a message from Panda regarding an archaeological expedition led by Professor Innes. The expedition's mission was to explore the subterranean mines beneath the city, yet there had been no word from them since. Concerned and determined, the Atom managed to persuade the townsfolk to allow him to embark on a rescue mission.
Upon locating the entrance to the tunnel, radio contact with the surface was lost. Within this dark abyss, he encountered three enigmatic creatures who forcefully led him further down, eventually depositing him in a cavern. It was here that he awoke, restrained alongside his companion, Panda, in a quaint underground village reminiscent of the 18th century. Approached by three young girls, their curiosity was swiftly quashed by a man with pointed ears who identified himself as Phineas Cadmish, known as the All Father. Claiming to have lived for two centuries, Cadmish declared himself a deity to the villagers. He asserted that outsiders were unwelcome, fearing they might taint his lifelong endeavor to establish a utopian haven free from the sins and vices of the outside world.
Panda was subsequently taken to the village church, while Atom found an ally in Kathryn, one of the girls. She brokered his release in exchange for a kiss, and she also activated Atom's belt, granting him access to the church where his friend was held. To his shock, he discovered that the entire expedition had been corralled beneath the church, destined for a gruesome fate in a colossal pit. Professor Innes was already being roasted on a makeshift spit.
Atom's attempt to infiltrate the gathering failed, leading to a confrontation with the All Father himself. In a daring move, Atom shrank to a minuscule size, skillfully avoiding the searing heat. He then swiftly expanded back to normal size, unadvertidly toppling Cadmish into the pit.
After successfully rescuing everyone and receiving accolades from the chief of the fire department, the Atom returned to the underground village. There, he collected a sample of the radioactive soil that blanketed the entire village and fulfilled his promise to Kathryn by giving her a kiss on the cheek.
