The Batman and Robin Adventures #9 is an issue of the series The Batman and Robin Adventures (Volume 1) with a cover date of August, 1996.

Synopsis for "Tears"

While trying to complete the chemistry requirement of her criminology degree at Gotham University, Barbara Gordon suddenly finds her good-humored instructor (in truth, a leading expert on disease and toxicology, recently defected from the League of Shadows) being abducted by Talia al Ghul. Knowing nothing of either's background, Barbara intervenes as Batgirl, and quickly finds herself outmatched against the older, stronger woman.

Despite Talia's brutal, scornful beating, Batgirl refuses to yield. Instead, she recalls her chemistry training and uses nearby lab materials to create a vial of tear gas, which she dashes in Talia's face. This incapacitates Talia long enough for Batgirl to rescue her instructor; shortly after, the police arrive, forcing Talia to cut her losses and flee.

To Batgirl's surprise and dismay, even a half-blinded Talia proves more than capable of evading the police. Nevertheless, the young heroine takes a quiet pride in her victory - bruises and all.

Trivia

  • Dr. Fazil's name - and alias of "Mr. Siddiq" - appears to be a reference to Star Trek actor Alexander Siddig, formerly known as Siddig el Fadil.
    • Ironically, Siddig would go on to be cast as Ra's al Ghul himself in the television series Gotham.
