Synopsis for "The Death and Return of Superman"

The first level has Superman fighting his way through a Metropolis power plant after a group of Underworlders have taken it over, and defeating Clawster to finish driving them off.

Afterward, a mysterious but extremely powerful beast dubbed "Doomsday" has appeared and gone on a rampage, already defeating the Justice League. Superman intervenes, fighting his way through street gang members before squaring off with Doomsday himself. The two exchange deathblows, and expire from their injuries.

Four would-be successors to Superman's legacy arrive in the wake of his death. One, the Cyborg Superman, fights his way into the Project Cadmus laboratory where Doomsday's body has been taken. He hurls the corpse into outer space.

The fourth level sees the Eradicator battling his way through street gangs before running into Steel. After they fight to a standstill, they agree to watch over Metropolis.

A giant spacecraft destroys Coast City, prompting the Eradicator to fly to the site to investigate. Once there, he's attacked by an army from Warworld, and killed after a battle with the Cyborg Superman.

Superboy cleans up the streets of Metropolis, then also flies to the ruins of Coast City to see if he can be of any help. He's also defeated by the Cyborg Superman, but manages to escape his captivity and flies to warn Metropolis of the cyborg's plans to attack there. At the Fortress of Solitude, "a being flutters weakly back to life." Claiming to be Superman restored to life, this black-clad hero joins forces with Superboy and Steel to stop the erection of another Engine City to destroy the world.

Steel fights his way through the Cyborg Superman's underlings, but is unable to stop a missile from being fired to level Metropolis. Superboy catches up to it and destroys it in the air. Steel and the resurrected Superman declare the need to stop Engine City to end the threat, but Steel goes alone as its defenses are powered by kryptonite. A regenerated Eradicator flies to Engine City, but is killed by the Cyborg Superman. In the process, his energies are transferred to Superman himself, restoring him to full power. Fighting through an army of underlings, Superman defeats the Cyborg and ends his plot.
