Synopsis for "Blowback"

On December 19th 2012, Captain Atom sits inside the Continuum - a suppression dome somewhere in Kansas - asking whether anyone had died because of his actions. Doctor Heinrich Megala in the control room states that the data is inconclusive but he, and General Wade Eiling, prepare for the inevitable next and more violent attack. Sat in the containment area, Atom laments that he shall never see 2013 because of this "sickness" and suddenly erupts with incalculable nuclear energy.

Twenty-three minutes earlier Atom was flying over the Pacific Ocean talking to Dr Megala back in the Continuum base who reveals that Atom is displaying symptoms of a "Quantum Fever" where his atomic structure is behaving irregularly. As Atom turns to return he encounters a cruise ship in distress, ignoring orders to leave it to the coast guard Atom flies down and attempts to create enough collagen to stabilise the waters. When Atom attempts to use his transmutation beams nothing happens and against the Doctor's orders he forces his power until he can transmute the water.

With the cruise saved, General Eiling arrived at the Continuum and Atom begins to flare up and uncontrollably discharging his powers. The Doctor explains that while Atom is akin to a nuclear dynamo, becoming afflicted by the fever created an imbalance which was sped up by saving the cruise ship and ultimately would end up with a nuclear explosion, the likes of which have never been seen. Atom attempts to fly back towards the base but is intercepted by three radar blips, the Justice League.

Cyborg, Green Lantern and Superman arrive and are debriefed by the Doctor. They decide to help Atom by flying him back to the base at Superman's speed. Over Kansas Green Lantern's protective shield is destroyed and the League members dive down to protect the civilians while Atom climbs into the Continuum chamber.

Now caught up to the present Atom's body expels impossible levels of energy and he is obliterated from the sheer power. Inside the control room the Doctor wishes that Atom is at peace wherever he is. But Atom is still in the same location, having only moved in time.

Elsewhen, Atom lies naked beside piles of wreckage and a newspaper dated July 17, 1994.
