The Griffin (Volume 1) with a cover date of November, 1991.
Synopsis for "The Griffin"
It had been twenty years since Matt Williams, now known as Griffin, a captain in the Accian Empire, left Earth on New Year's Eve of 1967. He was recalling when he left his parents, his brother, and his girlfriend on that day.
On New Year's Eve of 1967, Matt's last day on Earth, he was in his brother Todd's car, which he "borrowed" so that he and his friend Dave could attend a party. Matt told Dave that he was going to take a football scholarship at USC, as he believed that he would have a better chance at winning the Heisman trophy there than if he enrolled at Stanford and that he wanted to leave the Bay Area. After a brief argument between Matt and Dave, the latter exited the car and said that he was going to get ready for the party, while the former drove away, saying that he would get flowers for his girlfriend Janet and refill the car's gas. After Dave dismounted the vehicle, he encountered Janet. When Matt passed by his home, he found his parents standing next to Todd, who was angry about him taking his car. Matt continued to drive until he encountered a bright light. Suddenly, two aliens, Commander Kolov and Ensign Stomu appeared and attempted to take Matt with them and recruit him, as they believed he would be a valuable asset to them when they observed him. Matt accepted their offer and agreed to leave Earth with them.
In the present, Matt and his Griffin Command Ship were over Earth's orbit. They received a transmission from Regis, who informed them that they were approaching a restricted area and demanded that they turned around. Instead, Matt attacked the ship, destroying it, much to Stomu's disapproval. Next, Stomu and Matt landed their ship in California, where he left roughly twenty years earlier. After landing the ship, Matt flew throughout the city, looking for his old house. When he ringed the doorbell, the door opened and he saw his mother.
Meanwhile, in the Board's meeting room at the capital of the Empire, Admiral Kolov was attempting to vouch to Chairman Stinson on behalf of Matt, who was accused of treason. Back on Earth, Matt was explaining to his parents where he was during all that time. Matt's mother informed him that Janet had married a psychologist. Matt's father told him that everyone had believed that he was dead and held a funeral for him. Suddenly, Matt looked up into the sky, where an Accian ship was approaching. Doctor Maynard asked Captain Eagon if he could visit Earth, which he declined. As Matt noticed the approaching ship, he began to leave and his mother declared that he was no longer part of the family. Suddenly, Matt's younger brother, Mike, whom he had never met appeared. Dave, Janet, and Todd, who had learned of Matt being alive arrived at the house and were all surprised to see him. Janet came with her husband Paul McGuire. They were all confused when they were told that Matt was taken away by aliens. As Matt attempted to explain what had happened to him, Janet lashed out at him before he left.
