Synopsis for "Making the Metropolitan Prelude: The Boy Who Talked to Spiders"
1952, Maladyville, Mississippi. Young Hank Bendix collects fireflies for an experiment while Delia, his father's girlfriend calls for him to get inside before his father returns from work. His father, however, is busy fooling around with another woman.
Lieutenant "Happy" Hank Bendix of Halcyon Squadron is trying to get through to Storm Command. He notes that the game would be more fun if he wasn't by himself as Colonel Carin, a giant talking spider arrives to take Hank to Panacia, the realm of the spider where he will be promoted.
2001. Jackson and Christine arrive in Maladyville and at Bendix's old house. Jackson thinks at Bendix is still alive, or at least part of him. As Jackson and Christine search through the ruins of Bendix's old home, in 1952 he is in Panacia, completing his final mission while his father beats Delia for a backhanded remark about how his wife disappeared. Colonel Carin shows him Sierra Leone, in 1992, after a more-than-human force designed and led my a madman has slaughtered many people. That madman is him, as Weatherman of Stormwatch.
In 2001, Jackson finds Hank's diary, written as a letter to Jackson. In 1952 he was repulsed by his future actions, but the evils he will commit will allow for a greater good in the future. If he wants to restore the fireflies he'll have to create a future in which they can shine. Until them, he can rescue a damsel in distress. He returns to his home, and kills his father while he's beating Delia. Jackson and Christine return home, after finding his missing link, and a "road map to tomorrow." Hank leaves home, a pack on his back, a disintegrator pistol in his hand, and a spider for a shadow.
