Synopsis for "Futures End - Chapter 48"

Tim Drake has just emerged on the other end of a time-portal thirty years into his future, having convinced Brother Eye to destroy itself, five years in his past. He is surprised to see a garden filled with monuments to the heroes that he had fought alongside for years. He is further surprised when he finds Madison Payne tending to his monument. Happily, she rushes over and kisses him when she sees him - but all is not well. Brother Eye is not destroyed at all, and it has infected her. Suddenly, she disappears, replaced by Michael Holt, who reveals that Tim had stumbled into a hologram that he'd been using to delude himself about the harsh reality. Tim failed. The planet is in ruins.

Michael explains that Tim is not to blame. This is his fault, for creating Brother Eye with self interests. Having tired of listening to Michael and Tim expressing their self-pity, Brother Eye decides to have Tim assimilated, and the cyborgs he sends to do it are all former super-heroes. Suddenly, a stranger appears to help fight them off, joined soon after by a troupe of other survivors including an aging Ray Palmer. Desperately, they try to get Tim and Michael out of the building and away, as they explain that Brother Eye intends to destroy the Terrifitech building, preferring to take out a few blocks than to lose its prey.

Underground, Tim's saviour reveals herself to be Madison - much older. She had been waiting for all these years for him to come back, but she had been dreading it, knowing that he wouldn't have aged, and she did. Uncaring, Tim kisses her, glad to be with her again. Ray explains that despite Tim's efforts, Terrifitech remained a constant, protected by Brother Eye all through the time in between. Even if Tim could go back again, and ensure that Brother Eye went down, things still wouldn't change as they would hope. No matter what anyone tried, in the time since he disappeared Brother Eye would always win. Tim promises that Brother Eye hasn't won yet.
