Throughout his life scientist Jed Bruno has been bested by his rival Andrew Seldin, who beat him to building the world's fastest monorail, the first space station and wireless transmission of energy. Now Bruno is working on a time machine, but is shocked to hear a radio report that Seldin has completed one and will demonstrate it in one month. He resolves to steal Seldin's plans and breaks into his laboratory but is unable to open the safe. Instead he takes the time machine and travels into the future to the public demonstration then as the triumphant inventor is introduced he shoots him dead from a distant rooftop. As he returns to the present his memories fade but Seldin enters the laboratory as the machine materialises and Bruno shoots him in a panic. He destroys the machine and, finding Seldin's plans in his pocket, uses them to complete his own device. At the public demonstration a month later, Bruno is introduced to the crowd--and is shot dead by his past self. As he dies he realises that Seldin has beaten him again.
