Synopsis for "The Power of Shazam!"

Captain Marvel, Jr. is angry and furious to beat down Captain Nazi, who is horrified that he's at least seemingly failed to protect the preserved Führer. The others recognize that he's not even got the will to fight left, but Junior cares little, wanting revenge for his grandfather as onlookers begin to gawk at them. Captain Marvel points out that the chamber is essentially proof that Captain Nazi is nearly certainly a war criminal that will remain in prison the rest of his life… but it falls on deaf ears. At the Rock of Eternity, Shazam wonders about who this strange talking doll is that empowered Mary or even why Sarah Primm admitted she was Theo Adam's sister and why Captain Nazi came back now, of all times. His musings are interrupted when Lady Blaze bursts into his chambers and taunts him, saying that after 40 years she has returned and that she's followed a path he carved when he visited Hell to see her brother, Lord Satanus. She sics a large snake on him, which he easily turns to stone, only to find that Theo Adam is with her, and what's worse, he can speak again, calling SHAZAM to become Black Adam as another giant snake coils around the Wizard. Blaze taunts how Fawcett City, formerly protected in the past, is soon to be corrupted by her infernal power and Black Adam kicks the Wizard in the face. They begin to drag him back through their portal into Hell with a vocal urge to torture him and Shazam goes to cast the last spell he can, but finds he's too weak to even turn a page of the Historama as the Seven Deadly Enemies of Man break free and are unleashed on the world!

Elsewhere, “Muscles” McGinnis gets word from an aide, Peterson, that Sinclair Batson just doesn't exist! He has no past, no identifying documentation and, though Ebenezer talks highly of his education at Yale, there's no proof of it, making him acquiring funding from Waynetech all the more confusing. Muscles is worried that Lady Blaze wanting Sinclair dead seems like a confusing matter. Meanwhile, at his mansion, Sinclair asks Ebenezer to just invest his own money into the new casino and Sinclair holds a glass of boiling drink while saying that Ebenezer swore to do whatever it took to achieve his dream. Sinclair insists he believe in him more as he approaches his father…

The Marvel Family, meanwhile, have managed to restrain Capt. Nazi (having received special cuffs to do so from Crowley Pen,) only to be attacked by Black Adam! Black Adam, still furious at being betrayed earlier, throws Capt. Nazi into one of the news helicopters following the heroes, destroying their rotors and sending them reeling in the wind, forcing the Marvel Family to stop and save them. Black Adam pulls Captain Marvel's arm to wrench his shoulder and decries Shazam further for giving his powers back… when it behooved him, but then took them back again. Mary Marvel explains to Junior that Black Adam is a powerful villain who killed their parents. Junior, however, finds Capt. Nazi escaping and gives chase after him instead, leaving Black Adam to break Captain Marvel's arm! Mary Marvel finds she just cannot keep up with them both and tries to call SHAZAM to lend her powers back to Captain Marvel… only to find she can't return to normal! She instead tries to follow Junior, who is beating Capt. Nazi in the streets and disturbing nearby onlookers. Madame Libertine approaches in the crowd to try to influence Junior further, only for Mary Marvel to punch her aside, but she uses her powers to start fights among the people and lunges at Mary Marvel, using her powers to make her angry at Junior for not listening to her more. However, she is alack to find Mary Marvel's fury is not entirely against Junior; she steals Mme. Libertine's chemically-treated gloves and backhands her to the ground, ordering a cop to arrest her without touching the toxic gloves. She quickly and angrily uses a full-size orange sedan to knock Capt. Nazi into the street. She then demands that Junior take back his powers as Captain Marvel needs them to defeat Black Adam and she can't change back. She drags him back to the hospital and Mme. Libertine is arrested, bemoaning that making Mary Marvel lose her inhibitions only made her unstoppable.

At the construction site for the new Sinclair Batson backed Chippewa Casino, Black Adam dumps Captain Marvel into a large metal tube, piles girders atop him and then spears him through the arm with a piece of rebar, intending to bury him in concrete. He says that Shazam actually killed him to stop his rampage when he was first empowered, but he was reincarnated (as Theo Adam.) He says that this is a boon, since Shazam will no doubt turn on him soon enough too. Though the concrete fills the tube, Captain Marvel's power returns to him and he's able to break out, figuring he'll have to go to Hell to save Shazam, even with a broken arm.

Notes

  • Black Adam makes reference to War of the Gods Vol 1 4, where he helped Captain Marvel and the wizard Shazam, but Shazam stripped his powers and voice again in the end of the conflict.
    • Black Adam reveals, in this version of history, that Shazam killed him for abusing his powers. In the Golden Age, he was banished to the "furthest star in the sky" (and it took him 5,000 years to fly back to Earth directly) and during the Bronze Age, he had been instead teleported into some cross-dimensional Limbo.
  • Sinclair Batson is revealed to have no documented past and is likely some kind of demon.
