Synopsis for "The Ray, Part One"

Lucien Gates, a Korean American from California, is working as a lifeguard at a beach when he is struck by a particle beam from a failed solar energy experiment hundreds of miles away in the Arizona desert. The beam has caused anything it touches to take on strange properties, and in Lucien’s case it turns him into a beam of light. Unable to control his flight, he ends up in Seattle, nude. He figures out how to fly back to California as a beam of light, though is still unable to wear clothes, as they burn off him. He later figures out how to manipulate his appearance so that it seems he’s wearing a costume. Back home with his friend Darius and his hippy parents, he tries to decide what to do. Later, his girlfriend, Chanti, arrives, annoyed that she hasn’t seen him in days. She quickly finds out the truth. Throughout the issue, the Ray is fighting giant flying jellyfish type creatures that were created by the particle beam. He manages to use his powers to divert them away from the city and out to sea. Afterwards he goes back to work as a lifeguard, still needing to earn a living. Meanwhile, in Hollywood, a group of people watch an archive reel of footage showing the fate of Thaddeus Filmore, a controversial filmmaker who disappeared in South America whilst investigating a so called Lazarus Pit, rumoured to be able to extend or create life. A detective who travelled to South America to find him was shown a shrunken head, and told that was all that remained of Thaddeus. Nobody has seen the footage before as his family were to afraid to watch. They watch the footage, and see Thaddeus get his throat cut by a tribe, standing over the Lazarus pit. Everyone looks away in disgust, but Thaddeus suddenly appears before them, killing the owner of the reel. The rest of the party look on in horror, as Thaddeus declares that the world is his movie, and the other people are his extras.
