Synopsis for "The Beautiful and the Damned"
Beautiful Nora Cooper convinces her husband (Miles) to dig up the notes on Eternal Beauty from the grave of Dr. Martin Anderson. Miles is nervous because all of Dr. Anderson's subjects had turned to jelly when experimented with the formula. Undeterred, Nora has her husband work on the formula with the threat that she will leave him if he does not. He first experiments on a dog but, horribly, it turns to jelly. He then experiments on a rabbit which also melts. Unable to take the guilt of the inhumane experiments, Miles tries to get Nora to let him quit. Nora refuses and threatens to call the police and turn him in for grave-robbing if he does not continue. Miles agrees to continue the experiments. This conversation is overheard by Miles' invalid mother.
Miles continues the experiment on an old dying monkey who seems to show signs of youthfulness after receiving the injection. Excited about the success, Nora insists that Miles inject her with the formula, however, Miles refuses on the grounds that it has not been tested on humans yet. Nora tries to convince Miles to try the formula on his mother. Miles angrily refuses despite his own mother entering the room and offering to risk her own life for the sake of their marriage. Miles rejects his mother's offer and declares to Nora that they are finished and that he no longer desires her.
Nora follows him to his lab and observes him injecting himself with a syringe. After it appears that Miles is getting younger, she sneaks up behind him and knocks Miles unconscious with a hard object. When he regains consciousness, Nora tells him that she has already injected herself with the formula since his own success proved that the youth serum works. As she proceeds to melt, Miles informs her that he had injected himself with adrenaline for his heart, which gave him temporary vigor and the appearance of youthfulness. Nora begs Miles to help her as her bones continued to dissolve and continued to beg until her tongue no longer worked. Nora would go on as a pile of jelly for the rest of her life. Miles could do nothing in the end but walk away.
