When the people attempt to approach the tower, the dwarf appears and rains stones down upon them. Years pass, and the boys grow up and one of them resolves to challenge the dwarf in order to repair the clock which has been inoperable for years. They hear a ghastly scream and he fails to reappear. The other taunting boys, now men, resolve to punish the dwarf and rescue their fellow. They enter the tower, and they too, disappear into thin air. The villagers enter the tower in order to get to the bottom of the situation and what they discover startles them. The kindly old man sees that the nightly food he was leaving has been feeding a family of rats. There is cloth and a stain in the gears of the clock and the people realize the dwarf fell to his death years ago.
