Thebes is an ancient city of Boeotia, Greece, famous for being the birthplace of the god Dionysus[5] and the greatest hero of Greek mythology, Heracles of Thebes.[6][7]
History
The Sphinx is said to have guarded the entrance to Thebes, asking a riddle to travellers to allow them passage.[1] The hero Oedipus solved the riddle of the Sphinx, defeating the monster.[2]
The city was one of several where the newly created Amazons were sent for a period of ten years by the goddess Aphrodite at the request of Queen Hippolyta so they could learn whatever was needed to build their own civilization on Paradise Island.[3]
In classical antiquity the polis was defended by the Sacred Band of Thebes, the elite of the Theban army composed of 150 pairs of male lovers, comprising 300 men.[4]
