  • Would you stop adding characters, locations, items and vehicles without the [[ ]]!

Read on how to add a character etc... at https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Help:Comic_Template#Template:A

And, this is the unnecessary mess you are causing. https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Appearance_Template_Brackets_Needed

    • No thanks. Easier just to remove that tracking category from the template. Please don't shout at me on my talk page (or elsewhere). Thanks.

        Loading editor
    • Easier to just add brackets. Nothing you suggest makes anything simpler.

        Loading editor
    • No, editing one template to remove a tracking category is actually much easier than adding hundreds of thousands of brackets to it.

        Loading editor
    • Adding extra FaR lines to AWB because it misses non-standard entries is even more work.

        Loading editor
    • FaR?

And a second regex line is not much work--again, far less work than millions of brackets.

Do you have any instances of this causing any real-world problems with AWB?

        Loading editor
    • It's work that could have been avoided if everything were standardized. So just do it.

        Loading editor
    • You're obliging much, much, much more work than me for no pay-off. Bot makers will add one extra line of regex to AWB or whatever versus hundreds of man-hours of typing in brackets. We've been thru this before and you have no new information.

        Loading editor
    • Why would I come up with new information if you just ignore whatever doesn't suit your lazyness?

        Loading editor
    • So it's laziness when I don't want to type in the same characters several thousands of times but it's *not* laziness when you won't add a single line of regex? How does that work, Ollie?

We've been thru this before with other admins even and you are the one insisting upon this. The others said, "I see no objection, seems to work fine" and you are coming up with a baseless reason to make me do a lot of extra work that changes literally nothing at all. Nothing about how the template functions or appears is different in any way but you want to oblige me to do something extra and cumbersome for... what purpose?

        Loading editor
    • The others saw no objection. I did, for aspects of wiki editing I'm doing and they don't. So, don't do it. I don't have to "add a single line". I would have to do the bot work, and then go back, double check whether everything worked, and then find myself having to do more work that could've been avoided.

    • I brought it up in the past as well. I’m not trying to come off as hostile but it’s not like you listen to anything. You always have something to say. Not that we don’t appreciate your efforts but the arguing isn’t warranted.

    • This is a perfect example of when someone makes a warranted request: https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Thread:568059#6

It's not hard for me to change my behavior if there's some benefit. If there's not, then it's just someone complaining "I don't like this". It's hard to tease out which is which when an admin just writes, "Don't do this" or reverts with no edit summary, etc. This is a persistent problem around here, particularly with Tupka217. If you want to have a community, you can't rule it as a fiefdom and you have to explain things if you are obliging others to do something. The solution would be to have this documented not on multiple message wall threads but at guidelines or at the template's documentation. Since there is no political will to do that here, it's inevitable that there's a lot of "Don't do that" with no explanation.

If Ollie can give me actual examples of something that is made more difficult, then I'm happy to work to fix it. If he's just obliging me to do a lot of extra work that has no benefit, then I'm not interested in that. I'm not asking for too much.

    • Are there any issues you don't complain about? If it wasn't an issue such as the catergory page of Appearance Templates Brackets Needed then I wouldn't bring it up. Apparently that page exists for some reason and flagging errors within the site. I fixed nearly every JSA issue wth YOUR mistakes not to mention YOUR second round of Metal Men Vol 1 mistakes and I believe Kyletheobald cleaned up the last of YOUR mistakes and now there are around 20 new entries of YOUR mistakes in Animal Man. Are you special that only you can go against the rules? No one else is having issues typing two [[ brackets. You seem to have no problem typing these long winded trades (Scroll up as an example) so why is it such a backbreaking issue to press the brackets key twice? These moderators need to start banning you till you get the point.

    • I wasn't the one who complained--you were! I'm happy to live and let live about whitespace and brackets that change nothing at all.

You say that it must exist for some reason but the same admin above deleted the category and the person who is primarily responsible for maintaining templates here recognizes that the functionality is the same. So when you say, "go against the rules"--WHAT RULE?

All I've complained about here is lack of standards and documentation which seems like a pretty reasonable gripe.

    • We all live in a weird topsy-turvy world if someone can both complain about the lack of standards and ignore standards, and make a mountain out of every molehill and then call it the other party's hill to die on.

        Loading editor
    • Okay, I'll again: what standard? There is none. You not liking something is not a standard. It would be easy to have a single regex line in AWB that "fixes" this "problem" if it really matters that much to you. Far less work, doesn't oblige anyone else to do anything, and would fix this automatically.

        Loading editor
    • It's not a problem if you don't make it one. Is this your hill to die on?

        Loading editor
    • I don't have a problem with {{A}} or how anyone else uses it. I do have a problem with admins ruling by fiat about their personal preferences and refusing to be communicative. What is the "it" in your sentence?
