Tom King (b. July 15, 1978) is an American comic book writer defined by his poetic, character-driven stories, best known for his work on Batman, and most renowned for his miniseries about more obscure DC characters, such as Mister Miracle, Rorschach, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Professional History

Tom King was a C.I.A. counterterrorism agent operating in East Asia after 9/11. Eventually, he decided to quit leaving his family for long, dangerous missions, and became a comic book writer, fulfilling his childhood fantasies, primarily as a writer for DC Comics, though he has worked at Marvel Comics as well. He currently resides in Washington, D.C.

King's works have been divisive among comic book fans, with his miniseries such as The Vision, Mister Miracle, and Strange Adventures gaining widespread acclaim, while other stories such as his run on Batman being critically mixed, and others like Heroes in Crisis being called some of the worst comics ever published. His writing style is very poetic and relies on seemingly rambling but often meaningful dialogue and imagery, and often deals with heavy themes of war, guilt, trauma, and what it means to be a hero, usually built around dark mysteries.

King was hired by DC Studios in 2019 to write a film based around the New Gods for the DC Extended Universe with Ava DuVernay, but in 2021, the project was cancelled. In 2023, however, new DC Studios head James Gunn announced that the studio would be adapting to film King's acclaimed miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Upon the announcement, the book was very shortly sold out of many comic retailers and Amazon Delivery. King was also announced as now working directly with DC Studios, and it is likely he will be writing this new film version of his comic.
