The Tower of Fate is the fortress that serves as a nexus point between all realities and a beacon of magical power. The tower is also home of the incarnations of Doctor Fate, whose bearers are often considered to be among the most powerful magical beings.[1]
History
Prime Earth
The Tower of Fate was built long ago as a symbol of the Lords of Order, built in their honor.[1] Around the 1900s, the Tower of Fate would come to be occupied by Kent Nelson and Inza Cramer, the former being the first person to adopt the "Doctor Fate" mantle.[2] Eventually, after decades of service as a superhero of the Justice Society and a sorcerous defender, he eventually abandonded his life as both hero and sorcerer for a time.[3]
Years after abandoning his life as Doctor Fate, Kent Nelson was led back to the Tower of Fate by an unforseen force. When inside the Tower, Kent would confer with the Orb of Nabu, showcasing a dark and dangerous power lurking near Brooklyn and the one chosen to oppose the next looming threat: his great-nephew Khalid Nassour.[3]
New Earth
It is beleived that the Tower was constructed before Columbus discovered America.[4]
During Kent Nelson's first tenure as Doctor Fate, the original Amazing Man was able to gain access to the tower through the use of his powers in order to steal the Helmet of Nabu for Ultra Humanite. However his attempts were halted by the original Atom and Kent Nelson. Later, in the Crisis on Infinite Earths, the tower was used as a focus point for other DCU mystic heroes in their battle with the Anti-Monitor. Much later, After Kent and Inza's first death, the Tower of Fate was destroyed upon Nabu's exile by the Lords of Order.[5] Contrary to what was seen, the Tower of Fate is still in existence. It was only the Tower's Earthly anchor outside Salem, Massachusetts, that was destroyed.[citation needed] When Kent & Inza Nelson returned from the dead, Kent had magically joined the tower to an apartment block that Sven Nelson had once owned in New York. Thus both Kent & Inza could freely enter the tower through their apartment in New York.
The Tower later served as the repository for the Fate artifacts—Helm of Nabu the Wise, Cape and Amulet of Anubis—after Jared Stevens / Fate was killed by Mordru, the Dark Lord. They rested here in their proper forms (no longer a dagger or arm-wrap) until the new Doctor Fate was able to claim them.
Points of Interest
Protections
The Tower of Fate possess natural magical protections maintained by bearers of Doctor Fate; Nassour's time saw wards and protective barriers against malevolent forces and prevented unauthorized entries. These protections were potent enough to resist the powers of Zatanna, Power Girl, Blue Beetle, and Cyborg, showcasing resistance against both magical energies, physical forces, and esoteric alien energies.[8] However, the Living Lightning, Chaos Magic[9], and Hourman's Timeship[10] have proven to be strong enough to penetrate it's defenses.[8] In times of crisis, the tower shifts from different locations, travelling within the astral plane through the Ley lines around the Earth.[11]
