Synopsis for "The Halfway Place"
In Baltimore, the conditions following the Crime Syndicate's attack have made the place prime for Vampire attacks. Fortunately, Pandora, Giganta and Agent Kincaid of S.H.A.D.E. are prepared to put a stop to that. Pandora attempts to bond the vampires to their crappy apartment, so they can't spread, as the others help her destroy them. However, when one escapes, she is left to question how it got around the mystic bonds she learned from the Grove Witch.
When she follows his trail through the basement, she begins to sense that someone else - someone with no heartbeat - is down there with her. Unfortunately, she realizes this too late, as Andrew Bennett thrusts a sword through his chest. She survives it, thanks to her immortality - but her healing power has been temporarily disabled, so she cannot risk further attacks. She warns him that she is not a vampire, recognizing him once she sets eyes on him. She admits that while she is not alive, she is not a member of the cursed undead. She is Pandora, mother of monsters.
Meanwhile, Kincaid explains that she can keep Giganta out of prison by taking her on as a consultant for S.H.A.D.E. - a paid role, but there are protocols. Her job would consist mostly of killing monsters, and Giganta does find that appealing.
Andrew admits that the state of Baltimore is his fault, because he spared his own creations. The repopulation instincty seems to have kicked in, and they're overfeeding. The pair continue tracking the escapee to an elevator shaft, but Pandora senses that he is not alone anymore.
Giganta and Kincaid arrive at the same elevator shaft, on a different floor, and they can hear the vampires scrabbling to get out through the door. Below them, Pandora and Andrew discover that the shaft has been filled with a massive spider's web, in which many innocent souls have been trapped. Kincaid and Giganta are soon attacked by a swarm of disturbing spider-vampire hybrids. Together, the four of them cut their way through the vampires from either side, but some of the creatures still manage to escape.
Even so, with the majority of them gone, they can save the innocents trapped in the web. Andrew takes his leave, promising to try to hunt down the others before they can reproduce. Kincaid, meanwhile, turns to Pandora and suggests that the three of them could form an alliance and work together to do some good. Pandora likes the idea of that.
