Ubu is the name given to several men who act as the loyal manservant of eco-terrorist Ra's al Ghul. The origin and first person to became Ubu remains unknown, since Ra's has had many servants through the centuries.

First Known Ubu

The first known Ubu was Ra's personal servant, following his commands and escorting Ra's anyplace he went. Ubu followed Ra's to Gotham City, where The Demon sought Batman's help in finding his kidnapped daughter, Talia. Once they infiltrated the Batcave, Ubu would often push Batman aside in order to let Ra's be always on the lead during their subsequent journey to Calcutta and later to the Himalayan Mountains in search of the "missing" Talia. Afterwards, Ubu donned a mask and acted as the Supreme Brother of the Brotherhood of the Demon, but Batman easily deduced his true identity and defeated him decisively in combat, learning of Ra's entire charade.[1]

Afterwards, Ubu was assigned as Talia's protector and he confronted Batman and his team when they traveled to Switzerland, looking to capture Ra's. At first, Ubu was outmatched, but he managed to get the upper hand over Batman. Ubu then followed Talia to Ra's secret lair, where he prepared the machine that would serve during Ra's resuscitation. When the machine was ready, Ubu was attacked by Batman and he was immediately knocked unconscious.[2]

Batman, Ra's and everyone else left the place, but Ubu was left behind. Unfortunately, Ra's secret base of operations was blown to bits in a giant explosion while Ubu was still inside and he only survived the explosion as he was exposed to the Lazarus Pit's strange chemicals. Ubu's skin was grotesquely disfigured, but his body was strong and glowing with a green color. Ubu was found by a group of scientists and they took him to a hospital, where they started to experiment on him in order to learn the secret of the Lazarus Pit. However, when Ubu recovered his strength, he escaped from the hospital and travelled to Gotham City, seeking revenge against Batman. Ubu's mind had been twisted by the Lazarus Pit and when he arrived at Wayne Manor, he found it utterly empty. Ubu then started to destroy the place and he also murdered one of the scientist who had followed him from Europe, getting the attention from the authorities. Ubu then attacked Batman's friend and butler, Alfred, almost killing him. Like this, the rumor about the "monster of Wayne Manor" spread and Batman was forced to investigate. Ubu and Batman fought each other one last time, in the partially destroyed Wayne Manor and Ubu was ready to eliminate Batman, but the Dark Knight kicked Ubu with all his strength, causing Ubu to fall down a staircase where he met his death when he impaled himself with a splintered wood.[3]

After Ubu's death, Ra's replaced him with a similar-looking henchman by the name of Lurk[4] and the latter was subsequently replaced by another brute called Grind.[5]

Bane kills Ubu and takes his place as the new Ubu.[6].

Another person replaces Ubu but is killed only a few issues later.[7]

When Talia became Leader of the League of Assassins, a bodyguard similar to Ubu named Bulu, he turns himself into a Man-Bat but is killed by Damian.[8] She found herself another Ubu, who assisted her on her mission to locate the missing Batman. Ubu infiltrated Wayne Manor along with his master, her son Damian and a small faction of the League.[9] However, he is later seen siding with White Ghost and helps in resurrecting Ra's.[10]

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
