Uncle Sam is the National Avatar of the United States of America, the living embodiment of the American communal spirit. He is the leader of the Freedom Fighters and a member of the Council of Immortals.
History
Uncle Sam came into being at the founding of the United States of America, his great longevity leading to his recruitment into Hawkman and Hawkgirl's Council of Immortals.[1] He was active during the Golden Age of superheroes,[2] and was a member of the Freedom Fighters, fighting the Secret Society of Super-Villains in a battle that cost some of the team their lives.[3]
Uncle Sam worked for the espionage agency Checkmate under White King Jake Dalesko, who sent him to Belle Reve Penitentiary to recruit El Diablo to intercept a supposed metahuman terrorist entering the United States of America through the Sonoran Desert. Sam found El Diablo being beaten by fellow convicts Behemoth and Leviathan, fought off his attackers, and remanded him to Checkmate's Colorado base in the Rocky Mountains. Though he at first turned them down, El Diablo eventually acquiesced to the mission,[4] and after being briefed by Dalesko on their target, the invisible Xolotl, the two engaged him in the desert. Sam was badly beaten, but was carried to safety and hospitalized by Checkmate.[5] He recovered, and after Dalesko's death, was released from Checkmate while El Diablo was returned to Belle Reve, where Sam visited his friend and one-time partner for a game of chess.[6]
Uncle Sam convened with his fellow immortals in Antarctica to address the threat of the Dark Multiverse; they elected to destroy it with the Antimatter brain of the Anti-Monitor.[7] Eventually, Sam died and was interred at Valhalla Cemetery, but was chosen by Batman for enlistment into his army of the undead,[8] and would later rejoin the modern incarnation of the Freedom Fighters, providing guidance to the time-lost child sidekicks Ladybug and Cherry Bomb.[9]
