Under the Hood begins with Mason's life and his decision into becoming a policeman in New York City, where he heard the report of the first masked adventurer, the Hooded Justice, whom inspired him into becoming the Nite Owl and joining along with other emerging heroes like himself, forming the short-live Minutemen. Mason described the fallout of the Minutemen, consisting of The Comedian's rape of Silk Spectre, and the deaths of Dollar Bill and The Silhouette. It then discusses the burden of the 1950s, Silk Spectre's birth of her daughter Laurie, the disappearance of the Hooded Justice, and the lack of costumed villains. The book then finally concludes with the emergence of new heroes such as Doctor Manhattan in the 1960s.
