History

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), or the Soviet Union, was a constitutionally socialist state that existed in Eurasia from 1922 to 1991. The country was a one-party state, governed by the Communist Party with Moscow as its capital.

The communist state was rooted in the October Revolution of 1917, when the Russian government was overthrown, and following a violent civil war between the communists and anti-communist forces. The Soviet Union was formed from the unification of the Russian, Transcaucasian, Ukrainian and Byelorussian republics on December 30, 1922.

The Soviet Union was one of the Allied powers during World War II. After the war, the Soviet Union emerged as a superpower and became a rival of the United States during the Cold War. The Soviet Union dissolved on December 26, 1991 after the Communist Party steadily lost control of governing the state and the union republics seceding from the Union. The Russian Federation is recognized as the successor state of the Soviet Union.
