The Unknown X was a criminal mastermind and enemy of Superman.

History

Arthur Jameson was a respected member of the Metropolis, but at the same time, set up a criminal organization under the name "the Unknown X". The gang of hirelings, distinguishable by their X-branded armbands, operated in carefully organized heists at great speed, often more than one a day. It was the greatest threat the Metropolis Police Department had ever seen, and they were not equipped to stop them.

Jameson set up a committee of concerned citizens to look for a way to end it. This also brought the case to the attention of Superman, who foiled several heists but there were too many for him alone. He overheard one escaping thug calling Jameson, and probed further in his identity of Clark Kent. To throw the reporter off, Jameson made up a story of how he worked with the gang to trap them. He tried to scare off the reporter and pretended to flee town himself. He kidnapped Russel Walker, a millionaire who refused to cooperate with the committee, in an attempt to frame him. Superman spotted Jameson's yacht and apprehended him once he figured it all out.

Notes

• This version of Unknown X, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
