Publicity-minded film producer Jock Verner volunteered his chauffeur, Vance "Van" Vanucci, for an experimental hypnotic treatment. When Vanucci said the name of his greatest hero, Errol Flynn, mental barriers were dropped, and his body would temporarily function at the peak of human perfection. In addition, special effects expert James Jesse was paid to design a powerful costume for Hollywood's newest hero-at-large, Verner's Vanquisher. However, Vanquisher's mind was unbalanced by the treatments and by the repeated use of his new powers.[1]

Vanquisher's first and only real conflict was against his "competitor" Blue Devil, who helped Vanquisher regain his sanity by moderating his activities, but not before Verner had filmed Vanquisher's initial exploits.

Powers

Vanquisher could gain tremendous strength, speed and agility for short period of time, simply by saying "Errol Flynn."

Weaknesses

Equipment

  • Vanquisher costume: The Vanquisher's armored costume had built-in boot jets that allowed him to fly, plus shoulder and wrist cannons that fired powerful "biomedical blasts" of energy.
  • This version of Vanquisher, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths limited series. Even though versions of the character may have since appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
