The Yellowjacket, secretly writer Vince Harley, was a costumed crimefighter in the mid-1940s.

Vince Harley was a writer of criminal fiction who was always on the lookout to find the perfect plot to enhance his novels as his themes were becoming predictable and repetitive.

One day, while tending to his bee hives, a woman named Judy Graves appears at the door exhausted and tells him her name and that she is being chased before she collapses on to the sofa. Vince soon discovers her purse and going through it he discovers the valuable jewelry she has hidden in it. Later he falls asleep in the chair, but is awaken by a mobster named Jake Mallon, who was looking for Judy. Pretending to not know anything about the girl, he is beaten up by Mallon's henchmen and is knocked out. Mallon and his henchmen decide that they didn't want witnesses and try to kill Vince by letting his bees sting him to death. They pour the bees all over his body and they leave him to die slowly.

After they leave, Judy came out of the closet she was hiding in and watches in shock as the bees return to their hives instead of stinging Vince to death as Mallon has planned. It would seem that Vince Harley is one of the rare people in the world that bees don't sting.

Realizing that he has the power to control bees, Vince creates a costume and becomes the Yellowjacket for the first time. He then sends Judy to the police while he went after Mallon and his henchmen. Soon discovering their hideout, Vince confronts them and defeats the criminals and departs as Judy arrives with the police officers to apprehend them.
