Vivienne, also known as the Lady of the Lake, is a blacksmith and artisan who has crafted powerful weapons for gods and heroes through the centuries.
History
Among others, Vivienne created Excalibur and the Trident of Poseidon.
Vivienne's home and forge was within a lake in some unknown magical realm. When Dagon, the ruler of The Blue, stopped its life-giving water flowing through The Confluence; the water around the lake began to freeze and she was forced to retreat downriver. She ended up in a recently dried riverbed where she was possessed by a being known as Jenny Greenteeth.[1] Aquaman came through an "Omega Gate" to Vivienne's realm looking for Atlantis, which had vanished from Earth. He came to Jenny's castle looking for answers and she imprisoned him in the dungeons with the ancient wizard Arion, planning to drain and consume his bodily fluids. Aquaman broke free and ripped Jenny out of Vivienne. Both Vivienne and Arion believed that this proved Aquaman was the prophesied "Dark Tide".[2]
They returned to the forge so Vivienne could craft Aquaman a weapon that could kill Dagon and release the water before all life in the universe died. Aquaman was frustrated at the delay, but agreed to help them when Arion told him that Dagon likely had Atlantis and his family and gave Vivienne a sample of his blood so she could create a soul-bonded weapon. As the mystical energies she and Arion would need to use were dangerous, Arion created a shield around the forge and sent Arthur outside. While in the shield the energies were contained but they could not see or hear what was happening outside. When Vivienne was finished, Arion went outside to fetch Aquaman, but discovered that he had been kidnapped.[1]
Vivienne and Arion followed Arthur through a cosmic gate outside her forge. They were transported to Dagon's domain and ran into Arthur, who had already escaped but was still in chains and being chased by his captors the Mercenary Maids. Arion's magic could not free him but Vivienne was able to break them with the new weapon: Thalassa the Trilance Saber. She handed Thalassa over to Arthur and with it he was able to cut the Mercenary Maids's ship in half with a single swing and scatter them. Arion told them to run back to Dagon and tell them a new king had come.[3]
The trio went into the nearby city to find transport, but learned that Dog had forbidden people to travel freely through The Blue. They saw a man being accosted by guards and, despite Arion warning him to stay out of it and maintain a low profile, Aquaman jumped in a fought off the guards. The man introduced himself as Captain Nemo and explained that he had been sentenced to death for exploring The Blue against Daon's commands. Arthur asked if he had seen Atlantis and Nemo replied that he had, but it was far away and he could not take them told them there because his ship, the Nautilus, had been siezed by the magistrates who ruled the city on behalf of Dagon. Arthur deliberately got himself arrested to enter the courthouse while the others followed him under an invisibility spell. Once they were inside Arthur broke his chains, the fought off the guards and ran for the Nautilus, then set sail for Atlantis.[4]
