Watchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. The series was published in single issues during 1986 and 1987, and has been subsequently reprinted in collected form. Watchmen originated from a story proposal Moore submitted to DC featuring superhero characters that the company had acquired from Charlton Comics. As Moore's proposed story would have left many of the characters unusable for future stories, managing editor Dick Giordano convinced the writer to create original characters instead. Watchmen has received critical acclaim both in the comics and mainstream press, and is regarded as a seminal text of the comic book medium. After a number of failed attempts to adapt the series into a feature film, director Zack Snyder's Watchmen was released March 6, 2009.

A limited series prequel, Before Watchmen, was published in 2012 and 2013.

A limited series sequel, Doomsday Clock, began publication in 2017. This new series, written by Geoff Johns and written by Gary Frank brought the Watchmen characters into the main DC Universe. A second sequel that completely ignored Doomsday Clock was released in 2019 in the form of HBO's Watchmen series, penned and executively produced by Damon Lindelof.
