Having tracked some stage coach robbers, Jonah Hex gets a drop on them, killing one, injuring another and taking all hostage. When they have to ride into a storm, Hex is forced to seek shelter. Being allowed to stay in a farm house owned by an old woman and her daughter.
However, the daughter Valerie, has previously established a romantic relationship with the robber Roy, and she sets Roy loose. Roy beats Hex with an inch of his life with a hammer, but leaves him alive at the request of Valerie, and the two depart. The mother nurses Hex back to health over the next few weeks, his injuries causing him to dream about his part battles in the Civil War.
Back to relative health, Hex goes out looking for Roy and Valerie, leaving the old lady with Luke. Hex manages to track the couple down, hanging Roy down and taking Valerie as his prisoner to take back to her mother. After saving her from some saddle bums during a botched escape attempt, Hex gets Valerie back to her farm house. There they find that Luke stabbed the old woman and fled. Hex would run into town and get a doctor who would treat the old woman and save her from the brink of death.
Valerie changes her opinion of Hex's apparent inhuman character when she learns from the doctor that to get him to come and treat her mother, Hex paid $400 (all his money) towards the children's hospital that they were building in town. Afterwards, Hex tracks Luke to Mexico where he shoots him down in a draw.
