Synopsis for "Breakout at Fort Charlotte"
When Jonah Hex is drawn upon a young boy getting revenge for his fathers death at Fort Charlotte, Hex is grazed with the bullet and struck by his horse and knocked out. While being treated by a doctor, he has dreams about the events in which the boy mentioned:
As the Civil War raged on, Jonah Hex was good friends with Jeb Turnbull and his father Quentin Turnbull (the man with the cane whom has been plotting against Hex in recent times.) and after a brief Christmas holiday, Hex and Turnbull return to their unit in the Confederate army. However, the leave is marred when there is an uprising of Turnbull's slaves which is quelled.
Later after Abraham Lincoln finalized the Emancipation Proclamation, Hex began to question the Confederate's purpose for fighting, and decides to turn himself over to the Union Army but promised to Jed not to betray his friends in the Confederacy. When Hex turns himself over to the Union, he finds that they aren't so kind to the blacks they fight to free. After turning himself over, the Union army also discovers clay on his horses hooves and deduce the location of the rest of his regiment, and they are captured.
When they are brought in to Fort Charlotte, the Union army leader "thanks" Hex for his help in front his comrades to discredit him in their eyes, and then puts him in solitary confinement. There Hex finds a secret tunnel out of the cell, what he doesn't know is that it was put there by the Union Leader to prompt a break-out so that they can shoot the prisoners. This is because the Union Leader doesn't have the supplies to feed prisoners on top of his men, and cannot execute prisoners unless they are making an escape attempt.
When Hex helps their fellow Confederates to escape they are mowed down by gattling gun fire, and Jeb dies in Hex's arms. Hex manages to be on of the few survivors, and gets his revenge on the Union Leader who caused the whole slaughter. However, Quentin Turnbull vows to get revenge on Hex whom he blames for the whole ordeal.
With the dream over, Hex revives and goes into a shoot out with the boy. Hex lets the boy shoot him (although not seriously) and plays possum until the boy leaves. After Hex decides that he should return to the South and straighten his accounts.
