Synopsis for "Lives"

The Sandman bursts into Wheeler Vanderlyle's home just as he is about to kill Humphries. Vanderlyle, who is in the middle of a nervous breakdown, reveals that he knows the Sandman is Wesley Dodds and forces Wesley to unmask and drop his gas gun or he will kill Humphries. Wesley asks Vanderlyle to surrender but Vanderlyle attacks him with Edward Dodds' old bayonet. They fight over the blade and Wesley is stabbed in the gut, which will prove fatal unless he gets medical attention soon; however, he is able to take the journal from Vanderlyle in the struggle and throws it into the fire, ensuring that the knowledge of his deadly chemicals dies with him. Vanderlyle pulls out a gun and tries to goad Wesley into attacking him so he will die fighting but Welsey refuses. Just as Vanderlyle is about to kill Wesley, Dian runs in and shoots him dead. Wesley collapses from pain and blood loss.

Six months later, Dian visits the recovering Wesley at his rebuilt mansion. She brings along her nephew Sandy Hawkins and Wesley lets the boy explore the mansion. Once they are alone, Wesley tells Dian he is having new prophetic dreams and she admits she is still struggling with having killed a man, but they are happy that they at least still have each other. Humphries tells Wesley that he has visitors, and Wesley goes outside to find the JSA. They invite him to join while Sandy watches awestruck from an upstairs window.
