Synopsis for "Ibis the Invincible: The Forbidden Pool"

In times long forgotten, an octopus-man was cast a divine hand into a remote pool, never able to free himself, until a boy named Emil played hookey to go fishing there. The pull of a willing human benefactor, when the octopus-man tugged on Emil's fishing line, was all it took to break the spell and allow the octopus-man to walk free. Fortunately Ibis and Taia are driving by at that moment, and intervene when they hear the boy scream. Although they save him, the monster escapes. At dinner that night, Ibis tells Taia a legend of an ancient aquatic race who terrorized humankind, and were wiped out by ancient gods. The leader of these "fishmen" couldn't be killed, because he was immortal, and was instead sealed away. Ibis is sure the monster they encountered earlier was that ancient horror.

Not long after, the ruler of the fishmen commands fish to attack fishermen, but Ibis magically transforms them into sea gulls. Even garbing himself in a suit of full plate, however, Ibis is no match for the creature's strength and is flung to the ground. The king of the fishmen seizes the fallen Ibistick, and despite a warning from Taia, uses it against them. He commands the hand of Jove to strike down Ibis, but is clubbed by the god's fist instead, and then carried off to "a sunken river far from the sight of man" where he's imprisoned again. Still, he knows man's brilliance is a double-edged sword: someday his place of confinement will be discovered because of their drive to explore, and someday another fool with no care for the warnings of others will set him free.
