Whiz Comics #109 is an issue of the series Whiz Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of May, 1949.

Synopsis for Captain Marvel: "Captain Marvel and Sivana's Family Tree"

Sivana's finding it impossible to recruit new minions, because Captain Marvel always just stops his plans and beats up his underlings, and nobody's falling for that anymore. Since he can't take on the Big Red Cheese alone, Sivana hits upon another solution: create a machine to raise the dead and enlist his ancestors in his new plan.

Previous Sivanas appear and cause mayhem in town to distract Captain Marvel while the modern Sivana heads to the radio station to broadcast pro-Sivana propaganda. As each is defeated, they turn back into a ghost and return to the next world. Marvel catches up to Sivana at the station, who desperately summons up another ancestor for help, "Black Sheep" Sivana. Who, much to his surprise, helps Captain Marvel apprehend him instead of joining battle with the hero. As Cap explains, the black sheep of a family of villains would be good.

Synopsis for Freshman Freddy: "The Patient Patient"

Freddy is grabbed by the shirt by Harriet, who is angry that he hasn't asked her out lately to a specific place, demanding they do so today or not at all anymore, so Freddy decides to grab his jacket to take her more seriously. Stooge tells Ace he likely won't be able to go out with her himself that afternoon, but Ace is confident he can scoop her for a date, offering that she'll become more popular among the sophomores instead of hanging out with Freshman Freddy, but she insists she won't break her date with Freddy. Ace offers that she could if Freddy doesn't show up, which she points out would be ridiculous to happen at all. Stooge openly points out Ace was just turned down, but Ace is confident if he can just ruin Freddy so he'll be guaranteed a date and goes to buy some bandages at the drug store…

Meanwhile, Freddy is at the University Infirmary and finds out that he doesn't have any kind of disease that would keep him from going on a date with Harriet, much to his chagrin, making the doctor therein question Freddy's sanity. Ace walks out of the dorms and greets Freddy as he goes to grab his jacket, asking if he can “practice bandaging” on him, which he claims will “only take a few minutes,” then just ties up Freddy in bandages in his own room and tapes his mouth shut to steal his date with Harriet. Harriet, outside, tells Ace that she knows he did something to Freddy instead, but Ace thinks on how Freddy is too cowardly to admit that Ace caught him like this, but Harriet decides that Freddy is hurt, but she'll take him with her to the date… at a sewing circle, where Freddy gets to be fed cake by attractive women and Ace get to “volunteer” as a clothes' dummy. Ace realizes that Freddy took advantage of his ambush and Stooge laughs at Ace from the window.

Synopsis for Lance O'Casey: "Lance O'Casey and The Pirate's Festival!"

A woman rarely enters the Thieves' Den on Thunder Island, showing she's tough enough to stick around by punching out a pirate flirting with her, revealing it's Lance's old rival, "Singapore" Sal! She says she's too busy to take heads and orders her men to follow her to the backroom, swearing she'll kill him yet in her new ship, the Black Dragon, which used to be owned by the greatest pirate in history, "Black Mack." An associate says she can't just steal it, since it's used at the impending Pirate's Festival, but she says that's where they are going to pick it up. That night, they sneak onboard the Black Dragon and capture its Captain, dressing up for the Pirate's Festival at nearby Thunder Lagoon, mostly so they can bilk the paying pirates showing up.

Mike asks Lance exactly why there's a Pirate's Festival there and Lance tells him 40 years ago, Black Mack was arrested by the Governor of the Islands and defeated by a Navy Flotilla, surrendering. The Hoard of Black Mack is brought out, as it is every year for the Pirate's Festival, where it's ceremoniously accepted by the current Governor and "surrendered" again by someone playing "Black Mack." However, this time Sal decides she's just taking it as her own along with his hoard and with the Governor and his men as hostages! Lance soon finds that the Black Dragon is shooting at them, so Lance sails in close and boards them to start a donnybrook to beat Sal's men. Mike soon joins him, having tied the Starfish to the ship, only for Sal to shoot him off the ship, saying she's no coward like her men! She cuts loose the Starfish to drift away, but Lance dives in after Mike and boards it again, finding Mike somehow wasn't harmed by being hit by a bullet hard enough to knock him into the ocean, chalking it up to his thick skull. Sal enjoys the booty she's stolen, only for Lance and Mike to sneak up on them and throw flaming torches on to the Black Dragon, sneak below deck, free the crew and the Governor, pass out guns and takes a secret passage to the foredeck, led by a mysterious older man. Working together, they defeat Sal's crew while Lance destroys her sword and she is arrested. The older man reveals that he learned that being the greatest pirate in the world taught him a similar lesson 40 years ago of trying to pull a job "too big" for himself... since he is Eric Mac Leod, "Black Mack" himself having survived an extension prison sentence.

Synopsis for Golden Arrow, the Robin Hood of the West: "Flaming Destruction"

At the Madden Ranch, five miles out of Dry Gulch, swindler "Big" Jim is trying to sell "fire insurance" of $1,000 with his partner, Luke, as a protection racket. That night, they return with masks and torch the Madden Barn. Mr. Madden tells Golden Arrow and another rancher, Mr. Dodge, rides up and says he was given a similar "offer" from two ramblers that morning himself. The two outlaws listen in to his plan of having Dodge empty out his barn so he can go after them himself when they show up, but manage to confuse him by noisily entering a window to sneak in the front door and knock him out. They leave him in Dodge Barn and light the place aflame with him bound hand and foot. Golden Arrow manages to cut his bonds on an anvil, but the door collapses, forcing him to go out a window. He mildly apologizes to Dodge for his barn burning down anyways, but promises he'll get the dogs responsible at Parker's Ranch, where they already said they were going. He shoots their torches from landing in Parker's barn, saving it and then chases after them, shooting Luke off his horse and away from his gun, then tackles Big Jim from his horse. Luke tries to sneak up on him, but Golden Arrow lifts Big Jim's unconscious body into him and punches him out, promising they'll both be arrested soon.

Three men go lost in the Graja desert, and a man named Afra Sheym goes out to look for them only to disappear as well. Ibis and Taia happen to be visiting Graja, and go looking themselves on a magic carpet made of sand. When they land, the lovers are promptly sucked under the sand and find themselves in the afterlife, as confirmed when Cerberus chases them. After escaping from the giant three-headed hound, Ibis and Taia find the missing people on the shores of the River Lethe, all traces of life and reason gone from them.

Determined to save the missing people, Ibis commands his wand to summon "the Guardian of the Gate", who refuses to let his captives go. Ibis challenges him to combat, but even his powers are no match for the withering touch of his opponent, with Ibis quickly growing old as he's throttled. However, the Ibistick gave Ibis "strong physical powers" and he batters the Guardian into submission. Ibis, Taia and the missing people return above to the sun of Graja.

Trivia

  • Despite the cover, Captain Marvel doesn't fight the Sivana Ancestors all at once, but also the one in the center, wearing French musketeer garb and shooting at Captain Marvel, doesn't exist at all! Sir Sivana also dresses in green instead of white and "Black Sheep" Sivana isn't defeated, because he's not a villain.
