He reckons this is the work of a forgotten evil god, and agrees to travel into occupied Europe to duel with this force of evil. His plane's shot down, but he magically conjures a parachute and turns invisible. An errant word from the soldiers that attacked his plane betrays they think Ibis is one of their leaders, which clues Ibis in that his foes are also masters of the occult. After some sneaking he makes it into their headquarters, but in the dark his wand's stolen before he finds himself confront by the villainous Half-Man. This force of evil was once a brave soldier, but injured badly in battle so he has only one eye, one arm, one leg, and studied black magic to make up for his destroyed physical prowess. Ibis sees off Half-Man's underlings, but is distracted when Taia, who couldn't bear to be apart from Ibis for so long, enters the room.
