Synopsis for Ibis the Invincible: "Ruthven the Warlock"
A man named Ruthven asks Ibis to make heiress Vera Hungate fall in love with him, but Ibis of course refuses such a selfish request. Deciding to harness the forces of magic himself, Ruthven performs a ceremony and summons the demon Orpo, who makes his words irresistible. Suspicious to read in the society column that Ruthven and Hungate are getting married after his earlier appeal for magical aid, Ibis heads to the Hungate mansion to investigate. Ruthven summons Orpo for help, and the two malefactors disappear. Having heard the name of Ruthven's benefactor, Ibis has an idea of where to look, knowing that Orpo has a cult in the city slums.
Indeed, Ibis infiltrates the cult meeting and easily overwhelms Orpo's flimsy followers with his magical powers. Because neither he nor Orpo can be hurt by magic, Ibis punches him into submission instead. Orpo disappears again, with Ibis making the cultists swear to abandon their worship of the demon.
Orpo appears in Ruthven's home, telling him Ibis is about to hunt them down. Knowing now the demon can only rule through fear, Ibis intimidates him into fleeing. Ruthven attacks to get revenge, and he and Ibis duel, which ends with Ruthven falling out a window. Orpo grabs him in mid-fall, but rather than saving him, Orpo announces he's carrying Ruthven away to hell as the price of their pact.
