Synopsis for Captain Marvel: "The Heritage of the Batsons"

Philanthropist B.X. Batson dies, and leaves all the funds, businesses and factories to his name to the US government to help in the war effort. His nephew Ezra Trick and Gluck, head of the corporation, are disappointed to find out they've been left nothing, but they happen to tune in to Billy Batson's broadcast, and figure to pass the young newscaster off B.X. Batson's missing grandson to be able to gain control of the estate. With forged documents Ezra gets himself appointed Billy's legal guardian, but kicks Gluck out as legally he has no claim to any of the money. Gluck hires a group of thugs to kidnap Billy, which they do by having the leader pretend to be a broke old lady about to be thrown out by her cruel landlord. Gluck calls and has Billy say something to prove he's really been kidnapped, but what he says is "Shazam" and promptly mops up the thugs. Captain Marvel drags Ezra and Gluck and forces them to confess their scheme on live TV. Billy returns to his old digs, but still has to wonder if maybe he was B.X. Baxton's missing grandson...

Synopsis for Ibis the Invincible: "The Headless Horseman"

An inventor named Van Cort comes to Ibis for help, claiming the legendary Headless Horseman attacked him, killing his partner and destroying the amplifier for airplane engines the pair were working on. Ibis agrees to look into it, but as soon as they arrive in the town where Cort lives, he's arrested on suspicion of his partner's murder. Once alone with Taia, Ibis points out the Headless Horseman was a Hessian soldier. That is, a German, who might've risen from the grave again to help the German war effort by destroying something that would help Allied fighter planes be more powerful. The Headless Horseman attacks then, but retreats when Ibis blinds it by putting a bucket over its dropped skull so it can't see. The ghost collects himself and attacks again while Ibis is magically restoring Cort's invention. Ibis is suddenly struck down by the Headless Horseman, but the wizard proves to have conjured an army of clones to catch his enemy off-guard. Overwhelming the foreign ghost, Ibis commands him to break the spell that killed Cort's partner (getting him released from jail since the murder victim isn't dead), then gives the Headless Horseman a proper burial to end his haunting.

  • Ibis reminds Taia of their adventure in Germany that ran from issues 21-24, and speculates German occultists may be the ones who conjured the Headless Horseman.
