Meanwhile at the Halo Building, Spartan views Emp's visual recording of his will which he learns that Emp bestows the Halo Corporation to him.
In Istanbul, Cole Cash sands Maxine as he learns from her that she had fallen out of the Church of Gort and had been trying to kill Maxine since then. After breaking his sand belter from attempting to sand Maxine's head, Cole tries to get another sander but notices two people in trenchcoats and realizes that they have been sent by his employers to follow him. He angrily confronts them, telling them that he works alone until he sees that they are his employers who are revealed to be members of the Church of Gort - they actually hired Grifter to find Maxine in order to eliminate her. Both Cole and Maxine manage to destroy the mechanical zealots, ending with an explosion. In the aftermath, Cole is not too pleased of being manipulated into Maxine's problems as his reputation as a mercenary is sullied. As he leaves, Maxine comes up to him and wants to join with him as she has nowhere else to go and enjoys being in Cole's mercenary life. Cole then agrees.
