Will Eisner's The Spirit is a franchise centered on the masked crimefighter The Spirit, created by Will Eisner.
History
It was initially created as a Sunday supplement for the newspapers of the Register and Tribune Syndicate in 1940, which later turned into its section within the paper itself. Created by Eisner for Quality Comics editor Everett M. Arnold, is was reprinted in Police Comics (Volume 1) and later Spirit (Quality) (Volume 1). As stipulated in the deal between Arnold and Eisner, the latter kept the copyrights and it was a creator owned comic. Following the demise of Quality and the end of the newspaper run in 1952, several companies published reprints and original stories, including Harvey Comics, Kitchen Sink Press and Warren Publishing. Because the rights were held by the Eisner estate, it was not included in DC's purchase of Quality's material. They eventually acquired the license in the mid-2000s. DC published several reprints and later their own stories, Batman and the Spirit #1 and Spirit (Volume 1). They also included the Spirit in their short-lived pulp heroes series First Wave.
In 2015, Dynamite Entertainment acquired the license.
