Synopsis for "The Iron Maiden, Part 1"
Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts
When Valda, the Iron Maiden, attacks and kills a guy inside a pub for having dismissed her story about fighting a mighty beast, Diana has to intervene and calm down the whole situation. She realizes this Valda believes to be in another age, maybe even in another dimension, without knowing that she was catapulted in Boston instead, and that's why she reacted that way. After a brief duel, Diana defeats Valda in a battle of swords, then succeeds in making her talk with her, instead of fighting.
Norway, inside Warmaster's crypt
Devastation and Warmaster talk about why they both have a score to settle with Diana: while Devastation is her natural opposite, being born nurtured by the Titans, she really would like to know why Paula von Gunther wishes to end Wonder Woman's existence for good. Paula explains her that she was enrolled in A.R.G.U.S. by Diana herself and that while working with the organization, she was found and convinced by the Leviathan Organization to join their ranks. During a mission for Leviathan, she discovered this crypt and found the Spear of Gudra, a weapon that was property of an ancestor of hers.
Touching the spear, she was invested by a wave of memories from all her past generations: from the first world war to the American revolution, Paula witnessed her family waging war against the Amazons. It all started when the mighty Valkyries, explorers and warriors like the Vikings they protected, found Themyscira, coming in peace but welcomed in blood by the Amazons: a conflict started and the Valkyries were all slaughtered, one by one, while only Gudra survived. Establishing the lineage of the von Gunthers, they dedicated themselves to extinguish the Amazons for good, but failed each and every time.
After learning this, three spirits of three dead Valkyries appeared to her and told her she must avenge her ancestors. Paula understood that Diana tried to trick her into working for A.R.G.U.S. for fear she might discover her true power, a power that would mean the end of the Amazons and of their champion. But it's too late: Paula awakened her strength from the spear and now, with the power of all Valkyries in her, she will assemble the Four Horsewomen and kill Diana once and for all.
Back to Boston Harbor
While Diana tries to start a conversation with Valda, Detective Nunes stops the police from intervention: she promised Wonder Woman she would give her at least a chance to be herself, and she wants to find out if she will resolve the matter with words. Diana succeeds in establishing a contact with Valda thanks to their own mothers, Hippolyta and Bradamante, so similar in the way they raised their daughters. Once she broke into Valda's guard, Diana is able to explain her that she must change her mentality towards the world, making her promise to never lift her blade against an innocent while in this world. As she promises it, Diana hands over to her the sword she wielded, as she broke Valda's blade in the fight with her. They step into Diana's invisible jet, heading to Vermont, where the jet located a radiation similar to the one Valda emitted: it comes from the beast Valda was fighting in her world, that, it seems, was transported to Earth alongside her. Wonder Woman and Iron Maiden must prepare to face the enormous beast.
