Synopsis for "Fire and Torment"
Knowing that beheading cannot kill the Hydra, Diana ties the monster in place with the Lasso of Truth, then pierces its heart with a volley of arrows. The Hydra, however, does not die easily; as Diana retrieves her lasso, it hits her with one last gout of flame, knocking her unconscious and destroying most of her weapons. Nevertheless, Diana has survived Hephaestus' challenge; next comes that of Morpheus, who defies the Princess to overcome her fatigue and rouse herself.
In Man's World, Steve and Etta arrive at Steve's hometown, only to learn the elder Trevor has already died. As Steve grieves, Etta does her best to comfort him. On Themyscira, meanwhile, Queen Hippolyte continues to worry over her daughter's safety and Olympus' questionable judgments. At the silent urging of a mysterious vulture, she rejects the Gods' edict and hurries to Doom's Doorway, meaning to join Diana's quest.
Hippolyte's actions disturb the other Amazons, who send Philippus to stop their Queen before Olympus can be further offended. The two Amazons clash outside Doom's Doorway; Hippolyte, helped by the vulture, eventually triumphs and reluctantly beats Philippus unconscious, before entering Doom's Doorway. All this is secretly observed by Pan, who hurries to stop Hippolyte himself, worried that his "true purpose" might be unveiled.
Beyond Doom's Doorway, Diana overcomes Morpheus' challenge, and finds herself faced with two identical passages. Diana is drawn to one of these passages by images of other Amazons - and Julia - in horrific pain; in truth, these images are merely mirages crafted by her next opponent, the she-serpent Echidna. Echidna and her winged minions attack Diana, who soon realizes they intend to keep her from a glowing pool nearby.
After overpowering Echidna, Diana dives into the pool, which leads her through eerie visions of a crashing jet. These visions eventually coalesce into an even stranger sight: another warrior woman, also armored in red-white-and-blue, also calling herself Diana.
