I wasn't raised with much religion. But I felt, as a boy, that there was something... something good above us. And then my parents... they were so kind. And they died. While I watched. What kind of God would do that? I knew. There is nothing above us. Then I met you. And you were... kind. Like mother and father come again. Diana. After knowing you... I went home... and looked up... and I prayed.

Synopsis for "Murder on Mt. Olympus, Part 1"

Wonder Woman finds herself alone in an Amazonian temple, lifting weights as exercise. Suddenly, she is visited by a speaking ram. It's her mother, Hippolyta, and she needs her daughter's help. She invited someone to her bed after a night of scandal and excess in one of Dionysus' parties, but now, that man is dead. A knife has been plunged deep into his back and that victim is none other than Ares. Wonder Woman admits this is outside of her area of expertise, but luckily, she knows an expert.

She finds Batman paying his respects to his parents in Crime Alley and asks for his help, for he is the World's Greatest Detective, but Batman admits his expertise doesn't extend to the world of gods and magic Wonder Woman belongs to. Even so, he is the only one Wonder Woman trusts with this kind of mission, which is why he accepts. With Wonder Woman's help, Batman travels to the realm of Olympus, but not before she asks him which god does he pray to. Batman replies that God isn't found in the church, but rather in the alley.

Their first stop is the temple of Zeus, but they are stopped at the entrance by an annoying herald who demands for a sacrifice. Wonder Woman forces her way in by punching the herald and declaring that she just sacrificed a moment of peace and that the blood spilled in that moment would be dedicated to Zeus' thunder. Zeus, unimpressed by Wonder Woman's entrance, says that her mother will be punished with mortality if she truly is guilty of the crime. Batman knows that Greek gods don't die, but instead they go to Hades, and Zeus replies that he doesn't take kindly to the idea of his son being in the hands of his brother.

Wonder Woman asks for a day to solve the mystery and promises that, if she produces results, she can avoid a war between Amazons and Olympians, but Zeus, again, is unimpressed, for such conflicts are commonplace between their peoples. Batman asks Zeus to accept Wonder Woman's terms and if they fail to solve the mystery, he will be sacrificed in Zeus' honor, and Zeus agrees, admitting that he has always been intrigued by Batman, a mortal who has reached the realm of the divine through his own merits.

As the investigation begins, Batman asks Wonder Woman if she can use her lasso to discover the truth, but Wonder Woman admits she is unsure, for the lasso was a gift from the gods. They travel to Hippolyta's cell and asks if she had reasons to kill Ares. She answers that while she had dreamed of killing Ares for his crimes against Wonder Woman, she was as surprised about his death as anyone would be.

The duo then travels to the temple of Dionysus and asks him what happened the night before Ares' death. He says that he saw Areas leave his party with someone that wasn't Hippoylta, but refuses to elaborate any further, for discretion is a crucial component of pleasure. Wonder Woman smashes a bottle of wine on Dinoysus' head and forces him to experience pain, a feeling so foreign to Dionysus that he begins to scream and beg for mercy. He ultimately says that he saw Ares with Aphrodite just so that the pain stops.

As the duo departs for their next stop, Wonder Woman expresses her resentment at the gods' pettiness. They are supposed to represent hope for the mortals, but the gods only see mortals as entertainment. Batman replies that, despite her feelings, Wonder Woman still fights for her mother to stay alongside them, and Wonder Woman replies that her mother is a fool for thinking that she can change the gods for the better.

They travel to the temple of Aphrodite, who doesn't seem that sad upon learning of Ares' death and quickly puts her attention on Bruce. She claims to know nothing about the culprit, all the while she kisses Bruce and invites him to spend time with her. As Batman and Wonder Woman leave the temple, Batman admits he was tempted by Aphrodite, but suddenly, he is stuck by a lightning bolt of Zeus.

Outraged, Wonder Woman returns to Zeus' temple and asks what happened. Zeus replies that the lightning bolt was stolen and he has already ordered an investigation. Wonder Woman can't believe that Batman was attacked even when Zeus accepted to protect him, but Zeus claims innocence and reminds Wonder Woman of their contract.

Later, Wonder Woman tends to Bruce's injury and he tells her that he wasn't raised with religious, but he came to believe in a higher power. It was the only way to explain why his parents were so kind, but then they died, and Bruce stopped believing until he met Wonder Woman. On that day, when he returned home after meeting her, for the time in years, Bruce prayed.

Moved to tears, Wonder Woman lights up a series of candles and promises, in the name of the Olympians, that she will find whoever hurt his mother and friend and make them pay.

Notes

  • Both Zeus and Batman state that the dead Greek Gods end up in Hades. However, this is a major continuity error as all the "Old" Gods actually end up in the Graveyard of Gods after dying.
    • The same mistake is repeated in the next issue.
