Synopsis for Captain Comet: "The Guardians of the Clockwork Universe!"

This story is reprinted from Strange Adventures #22.

In his day job at the Midwest City library, Adam Blake answers a young boy's question about astronomy and tells him that gravitational forces keep planets from falling into the sun but the truth is more complicated and reminds him of a time when he was telepathically contacted by the Guardians of the Clockwork Universe. They summoned him to a planet at the edge of the solar system where they monitor all celestial bodies and ensure that they follow the patterns designed for them. The Guardians require a strong and brave champion to stop a madman from pushing the planet Lukan closer to its sun in Galaxy XII and endangering the cosmic order. They had previously tasked Radea of Hyperba with stopping him but they have not heard from her and fear her dead.

Remembering Radea fondly from a previous adventure, Comet speeds away to save her. He arrives and hears her thoughts, rushing into Lukan City and fights several crystal guards to find her strapped to a chair. She immediately turns on him and uses her mutant mental powers in a psychic battle until Comet realizes that she is being controlled by a radio wave band on her head. Once he removes the device, she returns to normal and explains that the Lukans are trying to position their planet to invade their neighbors.

Comet's ray gun shatters the crystalline warlords and he and Radea leave. He returns her to her homeworld and is thanked by the Guardian Nestro via telecommunications.
