Wow Comics #54 is an issue of the series Wow Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of May, 1947.

Synopsis for Mary Marvel, the World's Mightiest Girl!: "Death Challenge"

Mary Batson is still on vacation with Mrs. Bromfield in the South Seas and the Captain points out nearby Tonka Island, which is supposedly uninhabited, though Mary quickly spots a Tarzan-shaped man with a club (though he is wearing a watch.) Mary tries to alert her mother or the Captain to a man being marooned there, but they dismiss her as being seasick or “imagining things,” so Mary walks off to call SHAZAM and investigate it more as Mary Marvel. She flies out to find the Tarzan lookalike is Quentin De Pont of the Norfolk De Ponts and he’s out on a duel between rich white guys against Keith Bentley (of the Westchester Bentleys!) It becomes clear to Mary Marvel that Quentin is more than willing to stalk and attack his social rivals on a South Seas Island is a little ridiculous and points out they’re fighting over more or less nothing already, but they hate each other too much to not do it. Quentin tells Mary Marvel that he’s going to do it anyways and to basically get lost and Mary Marvel decides to instead convince Keith Bentley, who’s running around in a white loincloth, but is just as recalcitrant about this “duel of honor.”

Instead, she returns to being Mary and begs Keith to help her escape the island, claiming that she drifted there in a boat… and he makes it clear he’ll help as soon as he’s done with this duel! Quentin dashes in and throws a club to hit Keith in the head, but instead it knocks out Mary and the two socialites come to blows until one of those dreaded South Seas Black Panthers arrives and nearly kills both men until Mary wakes up and calls SHAZAM to become Mary Marvel who punches out the jungle cat. The two men realize they’ve been silly fighting with their lives over something trivial (and unstated) and they bury the hatchet by shaking hands. Further, when Mary Marvel asks what started the fight, Keith admits he doesn’t even remember! Mary Marvel flies off, thinking that quarrels are silly and she’s going back to her cruise.

Trivia

  • Despite the cover, Mary Marvel doesn't team up with Phantom Eagle in this issue to save him from a black panther; instead, she saves two socialites cosplaying as Tarzan (Tarzans?) from a black panther. Further, Phantom Eagle doesn't get tied up to anything in his own story. If anything, it shows elements from both stories!
    • Much like last issue, melanistic panthers and jaguars are not found widely in the South Seas... unless Quentin De Pont and Keith Bentley also brought it with them to the island themselves...
