Synopsis for Mary Marvel, the World's Mightiest Girl!: "Earthquake"
Mary Batson finds Mrs. Bromfield is being visited by Guy Arnold, a known geologist who is helping her find out if a mining company she has financial interest in should open a new shaft in the Badlands, especially so it won’t endanger miner’s lives. Guy offers that Mary come along and take notes for him and they find the Badlands, true to their name, suck to walk across and also likely would be a bad place to put a mine-shaft. Guy says there’s likely a fault below the Badlands and if they tried, it’d likely start an earthquake. There is suddenly a severe tremor and a big chasm opens up in the cliff. Guy figures that it would be a change in the caverns at the bottom of that cliff that caused whatever geological nonsense going on and starts climbing down. He doesn’t return for hours and Mary resolves to head down into the cave, finding that Guy has left arrow marks to indicate the path he’s taken. Mary sees a stalactite break off and come for her, so she calls SHAZAM to become Mary Marvel as it crashes on her head harmlessly. She flies in further to find that she’s had a strange sense of walking for days or weeks at a time (or that she feels that way commonly in caves.) She soon finds a strange village of people in loincloths who have seemingly named Guy Arnold as their King, but also that he looks twenty years older. Confronting him, she finds that he believes himself to be King Bhong of the Under-Kingdom. His guards rush at her and he orders her arrested, but she easily punches them over and flies off to a small alcove to collect herself and trying to process all of this. Her Wisdom of Minerva kicks in and she figures out that people in this village are being affected by radiation that makes them age rapidly! Thus, Guy Arnold thinks he’s been there for 20 years by his perspective and that he’s likely already forgotten all about the outside world. She returns to being Mary Batson and races in and King Bhong soon recognizes her, but says he loves living there and he’d prefer to be a King of the Under-Kingdom… only for a sudden earthquake to bury the whole village in the stones with Mary Marvel only able to save the last King Bhong before the same chasm they entered closes up forever. Once they’re outside, Guy finds he’s back to his normal age and he is highly confused about what happened as Mary Marvel says only a day passed in the surface world. Later, Mary points out she was only there for like… fifteen minutes and she finds in the paper that Guy proved the Badlands have a fault under them and they shouldn’t put a mine-shaft there!
