X, of the Underground, preyed on Gestapo and other Nazi officers in occupied Europe, in 1941.
History
A mysterious killer, mistress of disguise, sharpshooter, and femme fatale, X of the Underground struck at least half a dozen serious blows against the Third Reich's occupation of Europe, during her brief career in the early 1940s. The Nazis believed her to be a man, and she was blamed for demolitions all across Europe, from a bridge in Norway to oil tanks in Roumania, to an assassinated general in Russia, to a tribal uprising in North Africa. It is reliably recorded that she freed a large number of French civilian hostages in Paris,[1] and rescued a Norwegian Underground leader in Bergen,[2] then a Polish cholera researcher in Warsaw.[3] She was behind the abduction of General Rottenbum from Jugoslavia,[4] and arranged a fratricidal shoot-out among some Nazi officers in a hospital in France.[5]
Her mission was complicated by an admirer, in the person of U.S. newspaper reporter Bob Gray, sometimes called Jimmy Gray, from the New York Globe, who pursued her ardently but mostly in vain. He followed her to Berlin, where she organized a multinational all-girl team of Underground saboteurs, and after assisting them in one difficult adventure, he was still not allowed to join this team.[6] He also showed up in Norway, Poland, and Jugoslavia.
Powers and Abilities
Abilities
- Disguise: X could fool most people, other than Bob Gray, into believing her to be a man.
Notes
- X addresses her saboteur team as "Comrades," once,[7] so maybe she's joined the Reds, or maybe she's just being literal.
- X of the Underground is not known to be affiliated with Black X, X-5 Super Agent, or Captain X.
- Starting in Military Comics #10, X's suitor Bob Gray becomes Jimmy Gray, and goes from "ex-reporter" back to working for the N.Y. Globe. In the following issue he goes back to being called Bob, but one issue later goes back to being called Jimmy. And in the final issue of the series, Gray doesn't appear at all.
- During her six-issue career in Military Comics, X was drawn and inked by Vernon Henkel, Chuck Cuidera, Lee Ames, and Bob Hebberd.
Trivia
- X smokes cigarettes, and uses a lengthy cigarette holder. Bob/Jimmy Gray also smokes cigarettes. After Vernon Henkel leaves the strip, neither of them smokes any more.
