Synopsis for "Hero's Journey"
In Hero Brown's childhood, she played pretend with her little brother Yorick Brown, scaring him with the idea that a statue had come to life and named herself Queen Victoria. As a teenager, she is raped at a party by a college student. Once she graduates from college, she decides to forgo her study of literature to drive an ambulance and help others instead, to her father's consternation. On the day of the gendercide, her boyfriend Joe dies: he is the only man that has been good to her. Shortly after the cataclysm, she is eating cat food in a derelict grocery store when she is accosted by several Daughters of the Amazon. After a brief fight, their leader Victoria entices her to join them.
Several months later, she is held prisoner in Marrisville, Ohio, where a community of women have helped deprogram several other Daughters, but Hero proves to be too difficult to break: she has persistent hallucinations that Victoria still speaks to her and she is obsessed with finding her brother, the last man alive. She manages to escape and briefly reunites with her mother in Washington, D. C. before heading off to find him.
In the present day, she is on his tail and comes to a safe site in rural Kansas where astronaut Ciba Weber has recently come to ground and given birth to her son, Vladimir, Jr. and visions of Victoria tell Hero that the child has to die.
