During World War II, the American Q-ship "Phantom Clipper", crewed by the "Yankee Clippers," sank a surprisingly large number of Japanese and German warships.

History

The Q-ship "Phantom Clipper," and the services of its crew, were donated to the U.S. Navy in 1942, at Norfolk, Virginia, by its original commander, Captain Seth Perkins, a British citizen.

This unique warship's crew called themselves the "Yankee Clippers." Captain Perkins had a wooden right leg, from the knee down, shaped like a peg. His First Mate, Hook, had a hook for a left hand. Their Engineer, Erik, was a hulking brute of a man with a thick Scandinavian accent. The Bosun was called Sea Biscuit. All four of these officers were British, while American Lieutenant "Tiger" Shark, USN, joined the crew as their official liaison.[1] Two later additions to this crew were Little Billy, a young orphan and Jewaldri, his guardian.[2]

Paraphernalia

Transportation: The Phantom Clipper was a 3-masted, square-rigged clipper ship, only with advanced concealed supercharged engines, armor plate, two 8-inch guns, six deck-mounted torpedo tubes, a fog generator, and a catapult seaplane. She was quite a bit faster than most or all U.S. Naval warships of her time.

Even though versions of the team may have since appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
  • The Yankee Clippers served aboard the Phantom Clipper.
  • The Phantom Clipper series ran in Military Comics (Volume 1) from #9 to #16, with pencils and inks by Fred Kida, except for the last issue which was by Andre LeBlanc.
